Gombolo

Gombolo is an outdoor musical instrument made of tubes of different lengths. A child strikes the ends of individual tubes with a rubber mallet, producing sounds. The instrument is tuned to a pentatonic scale, which allows experimenting with sound and creating simple melodies.

How does Gombolo support a child's development?

Striking selected elements requires purposeful hand movement and develops hand-eye coordination and precision. Comparing the sound of individual tubes engages hearing, attention and memory, while independently arranging sound sequences stimulates creativity and a sense of rhythm.

The instrument can be used both for individual experimentation and for shared musical play. It does not require running or climbing, so it can complement inclusive play spaces.

Play with Gombolo supports:

auditory perception and memory,

sense of rhythm,

hand-eye coordination,

precision of movement,

musical creativity,

concentration.

Gombolo allows children to independently discover the relationship between movement, the length of the instrument's elements and the resulting sound.
